Chad Mendes vs. Nik Lentz square off in the second fight on the UFC on FOX 9 card. Mendes is 15-1 heading into the fight, with his only loss coming against Jose Aldo for the UFC featherweight championship in January of 2012.
Round 1: Chad Mendes rocked Nik Lentz with a big left hook early in the round, but Lentz shook it off. Mendes was all over Lentz, taking him down and bloodying his face within the first two minutes of the fight. Mendes let him for a minute before taking him down. Lentz attempted a guillotine choke, but Mendsz fought out of it and wrapped him up. Mendes stood the fight back up, only to take Lentz down again for the final 30 seconds of the round.
Round 2: Lentz came out throwing punches, knowing that it’s a different fight when it’s on the ground. Not much happened in the round until Mendes took him down with a little more than three minutes gone in the round. He surprisingly let him back up. Mendes about 30 seconds later again took Lentz down again. Lentz, however, did an impressive leg push to Mendes backside and thrust him off of him into the cage. Mendes quickly took Lentz down again to end the round.
Round 3: Lentz dropped Mendes with a right hand to open the round but Mendes popped up quickly. For the first time in the fight, Lentz blocked one of Mendes’ takedown attempts. Mendez looks tired and Lentz is landing much more with his strikes. Lentz was in control of the fight until Mendes took him down again with about two minutes left in the round. Lentz bounced up again and started to back Mendes up until Mendes landed a wicked flying knee. Mendes pounced on him looking for a finish, but Lents wasn’t in serious trouble. Mendes stayed on top of him and attempted a choke, but couldn’t get it on. The round ended as Lentz battled back up.
Mendes won the fight 30, 27, 30, 27 and 29-28.
