In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on UFC Tonight, heavyweight contender Daniel Cormier (13-0, 2-0 UFC) confirmed that he recently signed a new 8-fight contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Since defeating Roy Nelson at UFC 166, the undefeated 34 year old has been shedding off some pounds in order to make it down to 205. Many consider him to be a serious threat to the division’s current champ, Jon Jones.
But before Cormier can even think about a getting title shot against Jones, he needs to worry about his upcoming bout against Rashad Evans on February 22nd at UFC 170.
Evans recently dominated Chael Sonnen in a first round TKO stoppage at UFC 167, and he’s expressed his interest on working toward another shot at the title. Losing to Cormier would certainly hinder him in getting another crack at Jones.
It’s interesting to see how Cormier moves at 205. He was widely regarded as being exceptionally fast for a heavyweight, which was clearly visible in his fight against Roy Nelson. Cormier outpointed “Big Country” for 3 rounds, dancing around him and outboxing his opponent to a well deserved unanimous decision victory. However, against a quick light heavyweight like Rashad Evans, it’s hard to tell if he’ll have the speed advantage come this time around.
