Just a day after the main event for WSOF 8 was announced, one half of the inaugural lightweight title fight was forced from the fight.
Gesias Cavalcante (18-7-1) has sustained an undisclosed injury and will not fight on the card. The news was first reported by MMAJunkie.com and was confirmed to SciFighting.com by sources close to the promotion.
Justin Gaethje (10-0) will remain in the main event as he awaits a replacement opponent to challenge for the title. The undefeated Gaethje last defeated Dan Lauzon, finishing him in the second round while showcasing his heavy heads and tenacity, an attribute that he brought in to all three of his WSOF performances.
Cavalcante last defeated Tyson Griffin by TKO in a fight which earned him the chance to become the promotion’s first lightweight champion.
WSOF 8 takes place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, California on January 18th. The co-main event is a bout between Anthony Johnson and Mike Kyle which was rescheduled after Kyle injured his toe.
