It’s Joanne Calderwood vs. Katja Kankaanpaa in a 115-pound strawweight battle.
Round 1: The fighters spend the first three minutes in the standup until shot for the takedown and failed. Calderwood twisted her around and took her down against the cage, where she kept her for most of the round.
Round 2: You could drive truck between the two fighters; they are standing up throwing punches, but far apart from each other. Kankaanpaa again shot for the take down, but Calderwood stuffed her. Kankaanpaa looks a bit desperate, reaching for a takedown from her knees. Calderwood pushed her off and the two stood up for a few seconds until Kankaanpaa took her down again. She locked her up into a side choke, like how Brock Lesnar tapped out Shawn Carwin, but she didn’t have the hold applied tightly enough. Calderwood had room to jiggle her arm out of the hold just as the bell rang to end the round.
Calderwood surprised Kankaanpaa by taking her down with a leg sweep to start the third round.
Calderwood didn’t seem to know what to do with her after taking her down so she stood up and let her get back to her feet. Kankaanpaa went back to what won her round 2 — shooting for the takedown. Calderwood blocked the takedown attempt again and Kankaanpaa just held on. The fight ended with both fighters on the ground and Calderwood in the top position.
Calderwood won by unanimous decision, bringing her record to 8-0.
