The main event would crown the first ever WSOF featherweight champion. WSOF vet Georgi Karakhanyan took on promotional newcomer, Team Alpha Male member, Lance Palmer.
This would be the second champion in the promotion after Steve Carl defeated Josh Burkman for the welterweight strap.
Round 1: Karakhanyan came out looking as if he was already defending the title. He was confident and busy as he pressed forward towards Palmer. Palmer did well to block big shots from Karakhanyan but was stuffed when he tried to take the fight in to his own domain on the ground. Karakhanyan picked shots well as he put together level changes with kicks and punches. Krakhanyan was poked in the eye a few minutes in to the fight which opened up a cut very close to the eye. Krakhanyan winced through a doctor’s check-up and returned to action. Neither man seemed to lose a step from the break. Palmer started to land in the latter half of the opening round.
Round 2: Karakhanyan got some unintentional revenge on Palmer as he accidentally poked Palmer in the eye early in round 2. It was clearly not an intentional foul. Palmer shot in for a takedown which was countered with an armbar attempt from Karakhanyan. Palmer slammed his way out of the attempt and assumed top control. The control was Karakhanyan’s though as he threatened regularly with sweeps and submission’s. Karakhanyan got to his feet after a botched heel hook he attempted. Despite some impressive balance displayed by Karakhanyan in the first, Palmer was able to take him down several times in the second. The last one was all Palmer who made camp in the guard of Karakhanyan.
Round 3: Karakhanyan and Palmer both wanted to take round three after two rounds that up to this point could have easily been split, one a piece. Palmer found success on the mat again as he tripped Karakhanyan and grabbed his back immediately. Palmer kept back control for some time and didn’t do any damage, but clearly pulled the rug out from under Karakhanyan in the third round. Karakhanyan stayed patient and was able to take advantage of a slight error made in Palmer’s placement. Karakhanyan grabbed on to a guillotine choke and wrapped his legs around Palmer while cranking the choke. Palmer tapped before going unconscious.
“It was a very tough fight but if I put that guillotine on you, I don’t care who you are, you’re gonna tap.” Krakhanyan on the finish.
Official Decision: Karakhanyan defeats Palmer via Submission (guillotine choke) at 4:40 of Round 3. Karakhanyan becomes the first WSOF featherweight champion.
