Considering Chael Sonnen’s less than polite history of comments regarding fighters like Wanderlei Silva, Anderson Silva, and Vitor Belfort, it stands to reason that he’s not exactly a popular figure in Brazil.
Adding to that the diehard reputation Brazilian fight fans have, and one has to wonder why Sonnen thought it’d be a good idea to take a coaching gig on the upcoming season of TUF: Brazil. It’s no surprise that even Sonnen’s own mother expressed her concerns over her son’s safety.
Dana White has promised extra security for the American fighter, but rival coach (and rival in general) Wanderlei Silva has gone one step further. Silva is personally guaranteeing Sonnen’s safety when he arrives in Brazil to film the show.
“He’ll be 100 percent safe,” Silva told USA Today. “Just one guy is going to beat him, and this guy is me. Nobody (else) is going to touch you. Brazil is different.”
Even so, Silva admitted that Sonnen’s trash talking has been taken very seriously in his home country.
“It’s a joke for you, but it’s not a joke for me and not for my country,” he said.
“But don’t worry [Sonnen] . You’re going to be safe. But you’re going to pay for that account in June. I don’t like fake people. I don’t like jokes. I don’t like guys who talk stupid things about me, and when you say (those things), you’re going to need to pay.”
