The World Series of Fighting released official information on their upcoming show which has been booked for Jan. 18th at Hard Rock Live inside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
The bout is headlined by a WSOF rematch and inaugural lightweight title fight between the two top lightweights in the promotion as Justin Gaethje (10-0) takes on Gesias ‘JZ’ Cavalcante (18-7-1).
Gaethje is coming off of a dominant win over Dan Lauzon at WSOF 6. Gaethje showed off his always aggressive style and finished Lauzon early in the 2nd round.
Cavalcante returns after a TKO victory over UFC veteran Tyson Griffin back in August. Cavalcante finished that fight early in the 3rd round.
The first bout between these two was a closely contested match that was stopped early due to a bad cut sustained on the head of Cavalcante. That bout was in March of this year at WSOF 2.
The co-main event is a rescheduled bout between Anthony Johnson (15-4) and Mike Kyle (20-10-1). The two were expected to meet at WSOF 7 but an injury to Kyle’s foot forced him to withdraw from the bout.
WSOF President Ray Sefo commented on the lightweight title bout headlining the show:
“This has been an incredible year for ‘World Series of Fighting,’ and we’re excited to announce that our first event of 2014 will feature another championship fight,” said Ray Sefo, World Series of Fighting president. “Justin and ‘JZ’ looked well on their way to putting on a fantastic fight in their first meeting before an early cut ended the fight. Justin wants to prove he was deserving of that win, while ‘JZ’ hopes to erase the frustration of the loss. The victor will prove his point and also walk away with our first-ever lightweight title.”
Tickets for the event go on sale Friday, December 6th, at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT.
