According to MMA Junkie, veteran referee Herb Dean will be officiating the Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva rematch at UFC 168. Dean is one of the most distinguished referees in mixed martial arts history. He also officiated the first fight between Weidman and Silva at UFC 162.
The initial encounter between the two elite middleweights ended up a stunning upset when Weidman flatlined Silva in less than a minute and a half of the second round. Silva left himself vulnerable when he began mocking Weidman in the Octagon with his hands down and faking wobbly legs, so Weidman seized the moment and knocked him unconscious with a left hook to the jaw. UFC President Dana White granted Silva an immediate rematch and the two are scheduled to face off at UFC 168 on December 28th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer is the one who recommended Dean be the referee of the historic rematch.
“The first fight was quite strange, and I normally don’t recommend the same ref for the rematch, but here, I think it would actually be very appropriate,” he said.
Furthermore, the Nevada State Athletic Commission has also named the judges for the main event. The bout’s officials will include veteran judges Junichiro Kamijo, Chris Lee, and Patricia More-Jarman. All three judges have judged multiple UFC fights in the past.
