Having most recently defeated Evan Dunham in the second round via submission at UFC 167, Donald Cerrone (21-6) is now scheduled to face off against Adriano Martins (25-6) at UFC on Fox 10 in Chicago.
Martins made his UFC debut less than a month ago and defeated Daron Cruickshank in the second round via armbar, giving him his third submission win in his professional mixed martial arts career. This came as a surprise to many, as Martins is known more for his striking, having achieved eleven of his twenty-five wins by some sort of knockout. With the submission win over Cruickshank, he sent a message to his competitors in the UFC lightweight division that he’s dangerous on the ground as well.
Whether that message reached Donald Cerrone is unclear. The “Cowboy” has fourteen submission wins under his belt, so it’s not likely that Martins will look to tangle with him on the ground. This is likely to end up being a classic battle between a striker and a grappler.
Currently, momentum is on Martins’ side, the thirty-one year old Brazilian hasn’t lost a bout since 2011. Cerrone last lost to Rafael Dos Anjos in August at UFC Fight Night 27 via unanimous decision.
