Despite Dana White’s less than enthusiastic opinion of the fighter, Ben Askren may still end up fighting for the UFC.
He is reportedly scheduled to meet with UFC chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta later today. UFC president Dana White confirmed the information to MMAFighting.com, and added that he will not be there in person, but will join in via phone.
Strangely enough though, White’s opinion on Askren is unaffected by this news. In fact, he remains adamant that the former Bellator champion will not be joining the UFC’s roster.
“We’re gonna meet with him on Monday,” White said. “We’re just not going to sign him. He can go to World Series of Fighting where there’s actually some competition for him. There’s no competition for him at that other place [Bellator]. At least at WSOF he can get some competition and test himself.”
Askren was recently released from Bellator after a lengthy period of uncertainty. Unlike Eddie Alvarez, Bellator president Bjorn Rebney allowed Askren to leave the promotion without incident.
The WSOF has reportedly extended an offer to Askren.
