It’s been an ugly day in the world of boxing. The teams behind boxers Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios exchanged both harsh words and physical blows following a dispute over gym access.
According to USA Today, the two teams had a disagreement over workout times. Rios and his team were scheduled to use the gym space from 9AM to 11AM, but had to start late because of interviews. Because Pacquiao was scheduled to use the facility at 11AM, Rios’ trainer Robert Garcia asked for a few extra minutes.
It’s unclear why things escalated so quickly, but within moments of that, Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach called Garcia a “piece of ****.” Both parties began throwing around threats, homophobic slurs, and racial slurs. At one point Rios’ conditioning coach Alex Ariza made fun of Roach’s Parkinson’s disease.
Ariza then kicked Roach in the chest, resulting in security guards breaking up the altercation.
A video of the incident has emerged, but it’s still unclear who is at fault, and why things got out of control so quickly. Obviously both parties are offering wildly differing interpretations of the event, each painting the other group in a negative light.
