In a rare fight among friends, Chael Sonnen steps into the cage against Rashad Evans, the former UFC light heavyweight champion.
Rashad was escorted into the cage by training partner and kickboxer Tyron Spong, who also fights for the World Series of Fighting.
If Evans wins, he will tie Jon Jones and UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell with the most light heavyweight wins in the UFC, 13.
Sonnen went for the takedown early and pushed Evans up against the cage. Sonnen controlled him, until Evans reversed it and pushed him back against the cage.
Evans landed a big right hand on Sonnen, and Sonnen let go of his hands until Evans tied him up against the cage again.
Evans took him down and is on top of Sonnen, looking to club him with right hands.
Evans pounded him with heavy blows and Sonnen turned to his stomach, giving Evans his back. Evans smashed him from the back as Sonnen’s kicked his legs helplessly.
The referee stopped the fight at 4:05 of the first round.
Evans showed respect for Sonnen in the post-fight interview.
“Me and Chael are close,” Evans said. “I like Chael a lot.”
Evans said he wants a light heavyweight title shot.
