Having most recently dropped a controversial unanimous decision to current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones, Alexander Gustafsson was eager to get back in the octagon and fight again. The UFC originally scheduled him to fight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, but “Little Nog” withdrew from the bout citing an injury. Shortly afterward, UFC matchmakers set him up to fight the undefeated Jimi Manuwa.
Manuwa has an undefeated professional mixed martial arts record of 14-0. Moreover, he has achieved every single one of his victories via KO or TKO by no later than the second round. Despite his impressive resume, according to Jon Jones, Manuwa isn’t tough enough to fight “The Mauler.”
Lately, Jones has made comments indicating that the UFC is trying to protect Alexander Gustafsson by setting him up against opponents who aren’t top contenders. UFC President Dana White laughed off Jones’s remarks and responded kindly.
“Jon, I love you, but you’re not a matchmaker,” White said according to MMAJunkie.com. “Fight your fight, he’ll fight his fight, and don’t worry about it.”
Jones is expected to do battle against the heavy-handed Brazilian light heavyweight Glover Teixeira sometime next year, but apparently, he’s keeping a watchful eye over his rival Alexander Gustafsson.
“It makes you sound like you’re worried about it,” White pointed out. “When you talk like that, it sounds like you’re worried about it.”
