UFC welterweight Gunnar Nelson has been in a car accident that may end up delaying his return to the octagon.
Nelson was reportedly in Iceland this past weekend, riding in a truck that skidded off the road and into the icy water of Þjórsá, the country’s longest river.
“The pickup he was in (they were 4 in the car and Gunnar was in the passenger front seat) went of the icy road and rolled down the hill 3-4 times.” Halli Nelson, father and manager of Gunnar, told MMAViking.com.
“It’s a glacier river with very hard current. If the car had gone one meter further into the river, it would have hit deep water and the current would have taken it.”
Nelson had around 10 or 11 stitches put into his arm because of the accident, although it obviously could have been much worse. His manager reports that he’ll be ready to train again “in a short while.”
Nelson has been out of competition since February though, so any further delays are bad news for his career.
The undefeated prospect last defeated Jorge Santiago at UFC on Fuel TV: Barao vs McDonald. He is now 11-0-1 overall, and 2-0 in the UFC.
