After Lyoto Machida’s impressive middleweight debut against the #5 ranked Mark Munoz, it seems UFC president Dana White is eyeing a possible match up with #2 ranked Vitor Belfort.
“I think, and I’m just talking here as a fan, not as a promoter, I think a lot of people want to see him and Vitor Belfort,” White said at the post-UFC Fight Night 30 press conference. “That would be a fun fight. Vitor’s got to win down in Brazil. And who knows, [Machida] could fight someone else before that.”
“But I’m just saying, as a fan, and speaking for many fans, that’s the fight they want to see. At least that’s what everyone was screaming at me on the way out of the arena tonight.”
Belfort is currently set to face Dan Henderson next at UFC Fight Night 32.
If Machida vs Belfort is in the cards, it likely would not be scheduled until mid-2014 at the earliest. It would certainly be one of the UFC’s few non-title match ups that could headline a card though.
If it doesn’t work out, former DREAM middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi called out Machida after the event, presenting another intriguing possibility.
