Shortly after Cain Velasquez’s victory over Junior Dos Santos at UFC 166, the UFC announced that Velasquez’s next challenger would be heavyweight Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter Fabricio Werdum.
At the UFC 166 post fight press conference, White explained why Werdum vs. Velasquez would make an interesting matchup.
“His whole game has improved,” White said regarding Werdum’s skills as a fighter. It’s hard to disagree with White, the 36 year-old Werdum has only shown improvement over the years.
“The guy’s a big, strong, durable guy, and his jiu jitsu; he’s going to want to go to the ground, which makes this fight very interesting.”
Werdum told reporters that if he submitted Cain Velasquez, he would retire and take a job as a commentator. Werdum has already submitted Fedor Emelianenko and Anotonio Rodrigo Nogueira. If he were to submit current UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez, that would surely cement his status as a grappling legend in the sport.
This would surely prove to be a difficult test for Cain Velasquez, as Velasquez relies heavily on his wrestling to win fights, and that could be a detriment against a dangerous jiu-jitsu specialist of Werdum’s caliber. Werdum would have no problem being taken down by Velasquez, in fact, he would be very comfortable fighting off his back against the All-American Wrestler.
