MMA legend Renzo Gracie has recently expressed an interest in returning to MMA. The always outspoken UFC president Dana White has questioned why the 46 year-old MMA icon would like to return back to professional fighting. However, his recent comments on Fox Sports Live imply that White may actually be considering giving Renzo a shot at returning to the Octagon.
“He’s got my phone number. If Renzo wants to fight, Renzo can call me,” said White.
Renzo Gracie has fought some of the biggest names in MMA, including Kazushi Sakurba, Dan Henderson, Carlos Newton, B.J. Penn, Pat Miletich, Frank Shamrock, and most recently Matt Hughes in 2010. In his fight against Hughes, he lost via TKO by leg kicks and punches, and that was three and a half years ago. At his age, it is unlikely that Renzo has improved very much since then. There is also a question of how much Renzo wants to get paid and what Dana White and the UFC management are actually willing to pay him.
It’s hard to imagine why White would have any interest in putting in the effort and spending the money to have Renzo fight in the UFC. Most of the younger MMA fans don’t even know who he is.
Even if White and Renzo actually manage to work something out, the most important question still remains: Who is a good matchup for the 46 year-old Brazilian legend? The UFC welterweight division is full of young hungry fighters, and Renzo Gracie might be too far past his prime to offer any competitive fights for the UFC.
