The saying “adding insult to injury” is better phrased “adding injury to insult” for Mike Pierce.

The UFC Fight Night 29 welterweight had an MRI done on his knee following Rousimar Palhares’ now-infamous heel hook, and the results show a severe MCL sprain, according to the fighter’s trainer.

Phil Claud, trainer to Pierce, divulged the severity of the fighter’s left knee injury to MMAjunkie.com on Wednesday.

Pierce later tweeted that the Junkie story is inaccurate, but a subsequent tweet to that said he and the MMA news outlet were “on the same page,” verifying the initial report.

Pierce, as many MMA fans know by now, was submitted by Palhares a week ago Wednesday on the Fight Night card in Brazil. Pierce tapped to the submission, but Palhares held onto a heel hook, not letting go for several moments after the defeated fighter signaled he had been submitted.

The action Palhares took led UFC President Dana White handing him a lifetime ban from the UFC. Additionally, Palhares received a six-month suspension from the Brazilian athletic commission that was overseeing the event.

Palhares has since made a public apology to White via YouTube, but the UFC executive has stood by the ban with no octagon return for the fighter any time soon.
