Rousimar Palhares’ former coach at Brazilian Top Team felt it necessary to hire a psychologist to try and help Rousimar Palhares, but the professional help didn’t work, the coach revealed.
Murilo Bustamante, who for many years coached Palhares before the fighter parted ways for what he stated were “personal problems,” opened up in a recent interview and explained that early on he felt he needed to defend his fighter’s naiveté. Later on, however, things changed.
“I actually hired a psychologist to help me with him but, as we have seen, it didn’t work,” Bustamante told Fighters Only. “I can say this: Nobody ever defended him as much as I did every time he made a mistake like this. In the beginning I thought it was because he was naive or had too much nervous energy during the fights. But then he caused a lot of incidents inside my academy during his camps and I changed my mind.”
The coach added that Palhares would routinely injure sparring partners, a habit Bustamante was soon fed up with. Conversations with the fighter about his approach in the gym turned to heated discussions, Bustamante said, which happened often.
The relationship with the coach began to turn sour towards the end of Palhares’ tenure with BTT. The fighter’s attitude, combined with his excuses every time he lost, weighed heavy on the team’s harmony.
“I got tired of seeing how he hurts people so often when he is sparring, especially when he has a fight coming up,” Bustamante said. “We used to argue every time it happened, so we argued a lot. That was a reason, together with his nonsense excuses every time he lost a fight, that our relationship started to get bitter.”
Bustamante said he wouldn’t typically air the dirty laundry of one of his fighters. But since Palhares left the team, he’s made some comments about BTT that haven’t sat well with its head coach. That being the case, Bustamante is ready for an MMA tell-all.
“I wouldn’t normally say anything because usually what happens inside Brazilian Top Team stays inside Brazilian Top Team,” Bustamante said. “But Rousimar has been talking a lot of bulls–t about my team so I feel I am free to say what I think as well.”
