Chael Sonnen recently expressed his disinterest in Wanderlei Silva’s antics, but admitted that when Silva and his friends ambushed him at the Mr. Olympia event, he was ready to throw down.
Sonnen had been making a scheduled appearance at the event when Silva and three others confronted him with a camera, eventually posting video from the incident on the internet. Sonnen confessed that although he doesn’t like street fighting, he was very close to putting down Silva and his “scumbag” friends.
“I don’t like street fighting,” Sonnen said in a recent interview with Sherdog.com. “I don’t like to hear about it. It’s unprofessional and I’m not advocating any of this. However, I will not let a guy within arm’s distance. Wanderlei, if his finger he was pointing touched me, I would have put him down right there.”
“I would have had no choice. I must defend myself. And he had three friends — these odds aren’t great for me. I want to take down as many of these scumbags as I can while I can. You’re going to show that you had to build up this courage to come and mutter at a guy, with three friends? I think that was the most confusing thing, for me. If I was doing the publicity stunt, I’m going to go, ‘All right, guys, listen. That backfired. That thing goes in the fireplace.’”
