After riding a two-fight deficit heading into UFC Fight Night 29, Rousimar Palhares was able to find success in his welterweight debut in Sao Paulo.
Early on, Mike Pierce was looking to strike with Palhares, but couldn’t keep it up right. Palhares went for the single-leg takedown and then switched to his patented heel hook that forced Pierce to tap within 31 seconds into the first round.
“There’s really no way to put it in words,” Palhares said post-fight.
“I have to thank the Nogueira brothers for believing in me. They supported me throughout this whole thing.
With one in the win column, Palhares dedicated the victory to his cousin who recently passed away during his training camp.
“I’d like too dedicate this win over Pierce to his cousin that passed away 20 days ago and he’s up there watching us.”
Pierce was visibly upset with Palhares after the submission win, likely because the victor held onto the heel hook several moments after he tapped.
