Chael Sonnen is a fighter who takes to the media spotlight like a fish to water. That’s why it’s surprising to learn that Sonnen feels like his recent drama with Wanderlei Silva is a “distraction,” one that’s diverting his focus away from his upcoming bout with Rashad Evans.
“He’s a distraction,” Sonnen said to MMA Fighting. “He’s a distraction, no doubt about it. It’s silly. In this sport, you cannot refuse to fight a guy and then come out and talk about that guy. It’s like, ‘Listen, Wanderlei. I’ve said a lot of things about a lot of people, but I’ll make that walk every goddamn time.’ I will never pull out of a fight. I will never call in sick, and I will never say no. That gives me the right to say the things that I say.”
Sonnen is referring to the fact that Silva allegedly received a fight agreement from Dana White, but turned it down because he wanted PPV points for taking the bout.
Despite the fact that Sonnen sees Silva as a distraction, he just couldn’t help giving the man one last parting jab.
“I get it, he needs media,” Sonnen stated. “The UFC can’t give it to him because he’s not relevant. That’s not an insult, that’s just the reality. He’s just not relevant. He doesn’t have a fight coming up. But, it’s bizarre, and it’s also very transparent.”
The feud began in the lead up to Sonnen’s bout with “Shogun” Rua, a teammate of Silva’s. After Sonnen came out on top, Silva called him out. A bout never materialized, but that didn’t stop Silva from confronting Sonnen at the recent Olympia Expo in Las Vegas.
