Dong Hyun Kim is set to face Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 29, in a bout that could potentially allow either welterweight to finally break into the UFC’s top 10. It seems Kim is looking well past that fight though, and has some very strong words for the current champion of his division, Georges St-Pierre.
“I think I am number one,” he said in an interview with CorMMA. “I’m the best wrestler and grappler in my division. If I ever fight GSP, I can guarantee he would be shocked by my wrestling. When I trained in America, a lot of the staff knew I was a good wrestler so they brought in NCAA Division 1 wrestlers. Even the heavyweights could never take me down. I also mix in my Judo background with my wrestling. Even if they were stronger, I knew how to use that against them because of my Judo. I am going to bother you for 15 minutes. You won’t be able to just waltz in there and walk around. “
“Let us fight so we are forced to spend our last bit of cardio and will. In the end, your lungs will burst from grappling with me.”
That’s a pretty big claim to make, especially considering the fact that both GSP and current title contender Johny Hendricks are known for their phenomenal wrestling ability.
It’s a funny comparison in any case, as Dong Hyun Kim’s fighting style has been frequently likened to GSP, in that Kim has not finished a fight in over five years.
He is currently 17-2, and is coming off of back to back wins against Paulo Thiago and Siyar Bahadurzada. Prior to that, a bizarre muscle spasm led to a loss against #4 ranked Demian Maia, temporarily derailing the Korean fighter’s top 10 aspirations.
UFC Fight Night 29 will take place on October 9 in Brazil.
