Nothing is official yet, but Jake Ellenberger says a rematch between him and Martin Kampmann is likely. Both Ellenberger and Kampmann are ranked among the welterweight division’s top 10 (#5 and 6 respectively), and a bout between the two would certainly shake up the pecking order for the next crack at GSP or Johny Hendricks’ belt.
“Nothing’s set yet, we’re still negotiating options, but sounds like that I definitely will be fighting before the end of the year,” Ellenberger told MMA Fighting. “Hopefully in Vegas on the Dec. 28 card. I’m just looking for someone one the top 10.”
“[Kampmann] is a good possibility right now. That’s something I’d definitely look forward to. UFC hasn’t offered it to me yet so I just have to wait. I’m always highly motivated to fight. I’m excited be back in there against a top 10 opponent.”
Each fighter is coming off of a big loss, Ellenberger to Rory MacDonald, and Kampmann to Carlos Condit, making a bout between them that much more significant.
The two last met at The Ultimate Fighter 15 Finale, where Kampmann picked up a TKO win over Ellenberger in the second round. After that though, Kampmann was soundly defeated by current top contender Johny Hendricks, while Ellenberger picked up back to back wins against Jay Hieron and Nate Marquardt, allowing him to surpass his rival in the rankings.
