While preparing to weigh in for a fight he had scheduled for Friday at Shooto Brazil 43, fighter Leandro “Feijao” Souza has passed away, according to a Shooto official.

Company President André Pederneiras posted on his Facebook page that the fighter died while at a local hospital.

“It is with great regret that we hereby report the death of Leandro Caetano de Souza,” Pederneiras wrote on the social media website. “The athlete died in UPA of Botafogo … We would like to express condolences to all friends and family.”

Pederneiras also said that the cause of death is unknown. A teammate of Souza’s, Andre Santos, said that the fighter passed out before the weigh-ins for the upcoming fight card in Brasilia, Brazil.

“[Feijao] became ill before the weigh-in, fainted and was taken to the hospital,” Santos wrote.

A report from MMAFighting.com said that Souza died while attempting to cut weight. Shooto officials were not available for comment at the time of this publication.

Souza had a 5-5 record in 10 professional MMA fights, according to his teammate’s Facebook photo. He was 26.
