UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ next title defense will come against Glover Teixeira in February 2014, according to a report from ESPN on Thursday morning.
The title fight, according to UFC President Dana White, is being targeted for New Jersey and expected to take place on the company’s annual Super Bowl card.
“That’s what the champ wants,” White said. “We’ll probably have that fight on the Super Bowl card in New Jersey.”
The company’s push for the bout with Teixeira simmers down the buzz around a potential rematch between Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. The champ fought what he called by far his “toughest fight” in the unanimous-decision win over Gustafsson, a match-up that caused uproar from fans who felt the Swedish challenger won a decision.
Teixeira (22-2) is undefeated in the UFC, most recently dispatching former TUF winner Ryan Bader at UFC Fight Night 28. The Brazilian is on a 20 fight win streak, winning five since coming to the UFC. Of Teixeira’s five wins in the octagon, none have come against fighters ranked in the official top 10.
The Jones-Teixeira UFC card is still without a name, and no other fights have been announced. An exact date is also yet to be announced.
