Stephen Thompson climbed another rung of the welterweight ladder on Saturday, knocking out Chris Clements in the second round of their UFC 165 bout. The effort may have been enough to grab a top 10 slot for the up and coming fighter, but surprisingly, his sole defeat in the octagon still haunts him.
“My second fight in the UFC, I fought Matt Brown, who’s doing awesome right now,” he said in an interview with MMAjunkie.com. “I’m cheering him on. He’s doing a great job. But he’s the only thing on my mind right now. He’s my only loss since I’ve been in the fight game, so I’ve got to work my way up and see if we can do it again. I think we put on a good show that night, and I think we can do it again.”
Thompson is currently 3-1 in the UFC, and 8-1 overall
Matt Brown meanwhile has not been defeated since 2011, with his win over Thompson just one bout in a six fight winning streak. He is currently ranked at #10 in the UFC’s welterweight division.
Meanwhile, Dana White was very supportive of Thompson after his impressive victory.
“He lost to a guy that’s been on an absolute tear and is going to get a shot at Carlos Condit,” he said. “If you’re going to lose to somebody, that was the guy to lose to right now.”
White did not comment on a potential rematch.
