UFC officials have announced that Joseph Benavidez has secured a rematch with reigning UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. The bout will take place on November 30 at The Ultimate Fighter season 18 finale.
The two fighters originally met at UFC 152, in September 2012, where they fought to a controversial split decision. Winning the UFC flyweight tournament, “Mighty Mouse” became the division’s first champion, defending his belt two times since. Following the first pairing of the two, Joseph Benavidez has looked extremely impressive. In the past 7 months, Benavidez has beaten the likes of Ian McCall and Darren Uyenoyama, most recently, attained a first round TKO of Jussier Da Silva.
Although Johnson has been extremely impressive in his past couple of matches, it is Joseph Benavidez who has clearly done more improvement, and has dispatched his opponents in a much more convincing fashion. Fans of the flyweight division are in for a treat come November 30, as these quick fighters have enough cardio to dart around the octagon full speed for five rounds if need be.
Also on the Season 18 Finale fight card is a long awaited rubber match between former title contenders Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard. Neither Diaz or Maynard have looked their best since losing title shots within the same division. Nate Diaz most recently suffered his first TKO defeat at the hands of Josh Thomson, who is now fighting Anthony Pettis for the lightweight title.
Gray Maynard on the other hand was just floored and finished by TJ Grant, who recently had to pull out of his title shot due to an injury. This match is a must win for both men, as it will answer fans’ questions about where each fighter belongs in the lightweight division.
