UFC: Mark Hunt to Face Bigfoot Silva in Australian Main Event

It’s been a tough few months for heavyweight Mark Hunt, but he will now have the opportunity to close out the year strong in a main event booking close to home. Combate first reported the news, as verbal agreements are in place to see Hunt compete opposite Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in Australia. While no other details surrounding the Fight Night card are known at this time, it is scheduled to be held on Friday, December 6, 2013.

The New Zealander last appeared in the octagon against former champion Junior Dos Santos in May, but making it to the event was no small task. A prior assault charge put his ability to travel to the United States in jeopardy, but he ultimately secured a visa to compete at UFC 160. After being out struck for two rounds, Hunt suffered a devastating third round knockout defeat at the hands of “Cigano,” bringing his fairy tale run through the heavyweight division to an end. Following the fight, a staph infection led to multiple skin grafts and surgeries, putting his health in serious danger. He is finally on the mend, and likely looking to erase the last few months from his mind. He will be competing in Australian for just the second time in his career.

He faces a goliath challenge in Bigfoot Silva, a fighter who holds notable victories over Andrei Arlovski, Travis Browne, Alistair Overeem, and the legendary Fedor Emelianenko. He suffered defeat on the same night as Hunt back in May, getting TKO’d in the first round by a barrage of ground strikes from UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. The fight will help determine who can stay relevant in the top-10 of the heavyweight division.

We will keep our readers up to date as soon as any additional fights are announced for this card.
