Ben Rothwell defeated Brandon Vera at UFC 164, and used his post-fight speech to call out #5 ranked heavyweight Travis Browne.

“I have to do this because I’m a fighter in this division,” Rothwell stated. “If you want to be the best, you gotta beat the best. The fans have to make this happen. He’s up there right now. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but if the fans speak up we can make this fight happen. If you want to see an epic fight, with tons of replays and everything else that goes along with it. A dramatic fight that will shock the fans, then let me fight Travis Browne. I will bring it, and I will give you all that you want to see.”

Here’s the thing though, Browne is coming off of big wins against Gabriel Gonzaga and Alistair Overeem, while Rothwell is not even on the top 10. With that in mind, it seems that Rothwell’s post fight call-out has annoyed Browne, or at the very least amused him.

Here’s the Twitter exchange that followed:

Browne certainly isn’t mincing his words, but he does have a point. At the very least, Rothwell might have considered asking for a fight with someone slightly lower on the totem pole. A match up with Stipe Miocic, Frank Mir, or Roy Nelson seems much more realistic at this point.

Rothwell is currently 33-9, but has had a bumpy career in the UFC. He has won every other fight in the promotion, with victories over Brandon Vera, Brendan Schaub, and Gilbert Yvel. Meanwhile, he’s lost important matches against Mark hunt, Gabriel Gonzaga, and Cain Velasquez, which have so far kept him off of the top 10.
