Wanderlei Silva. Lyoto Machida. Vitor Belfort. Phil Davis?
Dana White has floated many enticing potential opponents for Chael Sonnen since his victory over Mauricio Rua, but with Wanderlei out until January and his fellow Brazilians already matched up with opponents of their own, the well has run dry for exciting bouts.
During last night UFC Fight Night 27 post-fight press conference, White revealed the UFC is considering placing Chael Sonnen in a co-main event match up with Phil Davis at the UFC’s 20th anniversary card, UFC 167.
“We talked a little bit tonight. He wants to fight on that 20th anniversary card. He wants to co-main that (card). I’m working on it. That fight (against Phil Davis) could happen.”
While it’s certainly a challenging fight for Sonnen, it isn’t one that many fans clamoring for. He had teased a move back to 185 lbs. even before his latest victory, so another fight against a contender at light heavyweight that does not draw significant interest seems to be a misuse of resources. The fight has not yet been made official, but I personally hope the UFC can find a more fitting opponent for him.
