For whatever reason, The World Series of Fighting’s next event has gotten a heavy dose of the Gracie family. The first family of MMA will be represented by Rolles Gracie, Gregor Gracie, and Neiman Gracie at WSOF5 in New Jersey next month.
Rolles Gracie will face off against heavyweight Derrick Mehmen on the main card. Rolles is a 3rd degree black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, and currently holds an 8-1 record in MMA. He is on a five fight winning strike, all via submission. This will however be his first time competing in 2013. Derrick Mehmen is currently 15-5, and is coming off of three wins across smaller shows in Iowa.
Gregor Gracie will be facing Richard Patishnock in a welterweight bout on the preliminary card. Gregor is the younger brother of Rolles, a Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and an instructor at the Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in New York City. He is a decorated BJJ competitor, but was recently defeated by Tyson Steele at WSOF 1. He currently holds a 7-3 record. This will be a bit of grudge match, as Patishnock recently defeated Gregor and Rolles’ half-brother, Igor, at WSOF 2. Patishnock holds a 5-1 record.
The Renzo Gracie-trained Neiman Gracie will be making his professional MMA debut against 0-1 Darren Costa at middleweight.
In non-Gracie match ups, WSOF 5 will be headlined by a bout between the former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski and Mike Kyle. It will also host the first round of a four-man middle weight tournament. Dave Branch will face Danillo Villefort, while Elvis Mutapcic will be paired with Jesse Taylor.
The World Series of Fighting 5 will take place on September 14 at the Revel Atlantic City in New Jersey. It will air live on the NBC Sports Network.
