The career of Dutch UFC heavyweight Stefan Struve has seen its fair share of highs and lows, but some unfortunate news that came to light during last night’s episode of UFC Tonight could spell the end of his career entirely. Tests have diagnosed Struve with an enlarged heart, and revealed that he is currently experiencing an aortic leak.
As one of Europe’s hottest prospects, Struve made his UFC debut opposite Junior Dos Santos just 3 days after his 21st birthday. He entered amid a five-fight winning streak, but a thunderous barrage of punches against the cage brought his night to an end in the very first round. Since that time he has picked up big wins over Christian Morecraft, Pat Barry, and Stipe Miocic, but intermittent losses have prevented him from ever truly putting his name in the title conversation.
Struve’s latest performance was in March of this year, a losing effort against Mark Hunt where he was on the receiving end of the “knockout of the night.” Struve suffered a badly broken jaw, and has slowly worked himself back into shape in recent months. Doctors will monitor his condition in the coming months, but it would not be all too surprising if his time in the UFC is over. We will keep you up to date as more information regarding his health and treatment comes to light.
