Matt Brown is certainly not looking to make friends with welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. At UFC Fight Night 26, Brown stated that his opponent Mike Pyle is “better” than GSP, a slightly controversial statement to say the least. During a recent interview, Brown once again threw some words at the current champ.
On a recent episode of MMA Junkie.com Radio Brown stated that, “I know where my wrestling stands. It’s simply a matter of executing those abilities in the ring with GSP. I can outwrestle him. I’m calling it right now.”
The #10 ranked welterweight is no pushover when it comes to takedowns, but a technical and powerful wrestling game is one of GSP’s most formidable weapons.
Brown seems to recognize this saying, “It sounds fucking ridiculous, and everybody is going to laugh at me, and I know the forums, everybody’s going to talk about how I’m delusional and this and that. … I know where I’m at.”
“I don’t think [GSP has] ever fought anybody that can put the kind of pressure that I put on him, and I think I can stop his takedowns,” Brown continued. “His best chance is to get a takedown. People haven’t seen my wrestling. I’m training with the best wrestlers in the world right now, and I’m getting pretty damn good at it.”
We’ll see GSP’s grappling acumen on display when he defends his title against former collegiate wrestler Johny Hendricks in November. In the meantime, Brown still has a ways to go until he’s in line for a title shot, but if he continues to put on shows like he has recently, it may not be long at all before we see him go toe-to-toe with GSP.
