According to UFC Tonight, Fabricio Werdum is seeking a match against the winner of Cain Velasquez v. Junior Dos Santos, and he’s willing to wait in order to get it.
Werdum has put together one of the strongest resumes in the division over the past few years, defeating Roy Nelson, Antonio Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and the legendary Fedor Emelianenko. He currently sits at #3 on the UFC’s official heavyweight rankings, and trails only behind Daniel Cormier and former-champion Junior Dos Santos. If Cormier does opt to permanently move down to light heavyweight following his fight with Roy Nelson, Werdum will have a strong case that he should be next in line.
While his roots are firmly planted in elite-level jiu-jitsu, Wedum has shown a more dynamic striking game over his past few bouts. He poses problems for any top heavyweight, and Cain’s wrestling-heavy attack would be no different. The champion would be put in quite a bit of danger if he did elect to take the fight to the ground, and for the first time we would get to see him defend submission attempts while in top control or even off of his back.
If, instead, Junior Dos Santos comes out victorious in the trilogy match, it would set up a rematch that Werdum has long sought. He found success early in his first run in the UFC, but it was a loss at the hands of JDS that led to his release from the promotion. After working to develop his overall game in Strikeforce, he has become a much more complete fighter. Now back, and with an improved stand-up game, Werdum would have the opportunity to avenge the sole knockout loss of his career.
Regardless of who is victorious, Werdum’s name should be high at the top of the list of contenders. UFC 166 will be held on October 19, 2013, featuring Cain Velasquez v. Junior Dos Santos III, live from Houston, Texas.
