Following a relatively successful fourth event, the WSOF nearly lost its next headline bout. Anthony Johnson pulled out of his scheduled September 14 fight against Mike Kyle citing a training injury. Luckily, the WSOF was able to find a quick replacement for the main event, bringing in ex-UFC champion Andrei Arlovski and changing the bout to a heavyweight affair.
WSOF executive vice president and matchmaker Ali Abdel-Aziz has confirmed the news, allowing the September event to continue on schedule. The card, which will also feature the semi-finals of the WSOF’s middleweight tournament, will air live on NBC Sports Network.
Like Arlovski, Mike Kyle is a UFC veteran, holding a 2-1 record in the organization. He currently sports a 32-9 overall record, and is 1-1 in 2013.
Arlovski holds an overall 30-10 record, most recently dropping a unanimous decision to Anthony Johnson, the man he is replacing in the Kyle bout. The fight, which took place at WSOF 2, broke a four fight winning streak, aside from a No Contest with Tim Sylvia in August, 2012.
WSOF 5 will take place on Saturday, September 14.
