As he prepares for his UFC Fight Night 26 bout against Chael Sonnen, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has enlisted famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach to tighten up his striking skills.
Roach compiled a 40-13 record in his own boxing career before a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease led him to retire at just 26 years old. He transitioned into the role of trainer, and has worked with some of the biggest names in the sport, including Manny Pacquiao, Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya, Amir Khan, and Wladimir Klitschko. His training has also crossed into the realm of mixed martial arts, as prominent fighters Georges St. Pierre, Tito Ortiz, Anderson Silva, BJ Penn, and Andrei Arlovski have all sought his assistance.
Rua has been known as a fearsome striker throughout his career, amassing 18 wins by knockout. As we reported last night, his match against Sonnen has been rumored to be in jeopardy, and we will keep you up to date as the story develops.
In the meantime, let us know how you see a bout against Chael Sonnen playing out!
