Mike Pierce is one of those grinder type of fighters. He’s slowly earned his way to another important fight in the UFC’s welterweight division. He’s got one fighter in mind to help his resume and work his way up the UFC ladder. He wants to compete against Jake Shields and prove his worth to UFC’s Brass.
He discussed his thoughts to The Verbal Submission:
“We’d really like to fight Jake Shields next. A little bit of that is availability. Both of those guys are coming off wins in the last couple months. We feel that stylistically, both guys are good on the ground so it could be a good place for Mike to really showcase his striking and his muay thai. I think it’s a good fight for us and it’s a top opponent that Mike deserves. I think we can put on a good fight and to be honest, I think we can finish Jake Shields.”
Jake Shield makes the most sense at the moment. The UFC doesn’t want to rush either one of these fighters into a title eliminator anytime soon. They are both looking for a statement win before competing against the top five in the division.
What do you guys think about this potential welterweight match up? Should Mike Pierce compete against Jake Shields or is a bout between the two a little far out of reach for Pierce?
The UFC is looking for more contenders for the featherweight division. This bout could end up proving that one of these fighters are ready to compete at the next level in the UFC.
