Daniel Cormier is looking to continue to his ascension up the heavyweight rankings and he’s got an opponent in mind that would ensure a huge blockbuster heavyweight match up and a bout that would be a fight of the night fight potentially. He’s looking to pick a fight with “Big Country” Roy Nelson and he believes it would be a great match up for the fans.
He’s hoping to fight Nelson in Houston at UFC 166. He discussed his thoughts with MMAFighting:
“Roy and I still have some unfinished business,” Cormier said. “I hope he re-signs with the UFC, so we can settle what he started two months ago.
“I want to find a way to give him a pass for his performance against Stipe [Miocic at UFC 161] since he took that fight on such short notice. In my eyes, that loss didn’t do much to diminish his place in the UFC heavyweight division.”
It’s a fight that both have wanted for quite some time and a bout that makes sense in the grand scheme of things. Both are looking to earn a title shot in the future and both are bigger names in the heavyweight division.
Roy Nelson just needs to resign in the UFC. If he goes to Bellator, there won’t be the same opportunities that he can have in the octagon. There’s a future bout with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. That’s about it.
Only time will tell if Roy Nelson decides to stay in the UFC or not, one thing’s for sure. If he does resign Daniel Cormier will be waiting and hoping to get his hands on him to settle their rivalry.
