Anthony Pettis is looking for a fight in October and it looks like he want a fighter who looked fantastic in his most recent bout. A bout between Pettis and Thomson would easily produce fireworks and it may happen in the near future. Both are looking to earn a title shot in their next bout but a fight between them may determine the next contender after TJ Grant and Benson Henderson collide in August.
He discussed his thoughts about Josh Thomson on MMA Fighting:
“Thomson called me out,” he said. “I’m never afraid to fight anyone, and I’m tired of waiting. If I’m supposed to be the best, then why not beat him in October? [It will] set me up for a title shot late this year or early next [year].
“Only bad thing is no one really knows who he is.”
For Pettis to say that no one knows who Josh Thomson is, is an overstatement. Josh was a mainstay in Strikeforce competing against the likes of Clay Guida, Pat Healy, and his career defining trilogy with Gilbert Melendez.
The UFC has a great contender’s bout between two of the best lightweights in the world. If Pettis wants to get his chance at Benson Henderson or the UFC title, he may have to go through Thomson first.
Thomson is looking to build some more momentum after his recent win over Nate Diaz at UFC on Fox 7 and a win for him would prove no doubt that he deserves the next crack at the lightweight championship.
A win-win if you ask me.
