Herb Dean Was Unsure If Anderson Was Unconscious

Herb Dean is one of the best mixed martial arts referees in the business today. He’s had for the most part the best decision making skills out of all the referees currently and even he was unsure about the main event of UFC 162. We all know the story by now. Anderson Silva got knocked out, but coming from the referee, he couldn’t tell if Anderson was showboating or if he was indeed knocked out.

He discussed what transpired with MMA Junkie:

“It was almost a replay of the pantomime that he had done. I saw him go down. I respond to it whether it’s pantomime or not, but to be honest, I wasn’t sure. But I’m going to respond and get in close to get a better look. Once I got in there and got a better look, he was unconscious to me.”

Thank goodness that Herb Dean was able to figure it out sooner rather than later. There are plenty of fights that happen either prematurely or the guy/girl is knocked out for a number of seconds before the referee sees fit to end the fight.

We can all just wait and salivate over the rematch between the former champion Anderson Silva and the new champion Chris Weidman. This fight will do huge numbers for the UFC and it will be one of the biggest fight cards of the year.

Who do you think takes the rematch? They are destined to meet again and this time we may end up seeing the best Anderson Silva yet.
