The bout between Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger plays a huge role in terms of rankings and possibility the next contender in the UFC welterweight division. They recently went to twitter bashing each other and Jake made some interesting accusations about his next opponent. He stated that he was all media hyped and he hasn’t competed against the best in the division like he has.
Thinking about it. He does have some valid points. Rory is currently ranked higher than Ellenberger in the UFC. MacDonald is currently ranked as the third best welterweight outside of GSP and Ellenberger is ranked fourth.
Ellenberger has defeated Diego Sanchez, Jake Shields, and Nate Marquart. Some of the best and most popular fighters in the 170 lb division. He’s earned his stripes as an elite welterweight, only losing to Martin Kampmann in his last nine fights.
Jake Ellenberger is definitely a promising welterweight but he doesn’t have the same resume as Ellenberger currently. His wins over Mike Pyle, Nate Diaz, and Bj Penn are certainly impressive but Diaz and Penn are better off in the lightweight division. A win over Pyle is good but doesn’t speak the volumes of Ellenberger’s current opponents.
This is a sport where you get to punch and kick your opponent for a living. Luckily for us, we get to find out who the better fighter is on UFC On Fox 8. Is Rory the heir to the GSP throne? Way too early to tell, but a win over his toughest opposition to date will certainly go a long way as to proving critics and Ellenberger that he’s got what to takes to be one of the best fighters of all time.
