Jon Jones will be looking to break the all time UFC light heavyweight defense record come October. He will be competing against Alexander Gustafsson in Ontario, Canada. Both fighters have been adamant about competing against each on twitter and it looks like the bout is finally in the works.
Jon Jones has had a stranglehold on the light heavyweight division since winning the title from Mauricio “Shogun” Rua back at UFC 128. He’s already stated that he’s interested in a future bout with Anderson Silva and challenging himself in the heavyweight division. Before we start salivating about bouts between him and Cain Velasquez or Alistair Overeem, he needs to get past the name known as “The Mauler”.
Alexander Gustafsson has looked amazing since his first setback. He lost his UFC debut to Phil Davis at UFC 112. Since then, he’s been on a six-fight winning streak since. Defeating Thiago Silva, Vladimir Matyushenko, and recently Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. He was scheduled to compete against Gegard Mousasi at UFC on Fuel TV 9 but an eye cut made him withdraw from the bout.
Dana White stated that Lyoto Machida would be the next contender for Jon Jones, but we’ve already seen that bout before. Jones defeated Machida at UFC 141 and won by a hangman’s guillotine choke. Fans and media alike weren’t too keen on the thought of another title match for Machida and it looks like Dana White and Joe Silva were listening.
This bout should be an explosive bout to say the least. Jones has a keen ability to finish his opponents and Gustafsson is one of the last remaining contenders left for Jones in the light heavyweight division.
