It was recently announced that Demian Maia will be facing off against Josh Koscheck at UFC 163 in Brazil. This fight should be an entertaining scrap against two top level welterweights. The only problem is that Maia is coming off the biggest win of his career against Jon Fitch and Koscheck is currently on a two-fight losing streak. How does that make any sense?
Demian Maia has looked phenomenal since making the decision to drop to welterweight. There are already talks of him becoming a title contender. Fights with Nick Diaz or the winner of Jake Ellenberger/Rory MacDonald would of been great tests to see if Maia is ready for GSP. Instead he gets Josh Koscheck.
Koscheck should be fighting against lower end competition right now instead of competing with the elite of the welterweight division. What happens if Koscheck wins? This is a fight with no upside potential for Maia.
Koscheck has to fight for his career and Maia is fighting to keep his standing in the top ten of the division. Let’s hope Maia is able to defeat Koscheck in August so we can see him work his way to a UFC welterweight championship.
